On
March 31, 2015, the Pontifical Council invited 90 composers from around
the world to submit a setting of the official text for the Hymn for the
Holy Year of Mercy announced by Pope Francis on March 13. On August 6
it was revealed that Paul Inwood's setting had been chosen. The text (actually
a more of a Litany than a Hymn) has verses in different languages and
a Latin antiphon and a Latin mini-refrain.
Both
Paul Inwood and the author of the text, Jesuit Father Eugenio Costa, have
donated all copyrights and performing rights in the Hymn to the Holy See.
